Gail is a retired nurse who wanted to volunteer to help an older resident stay independent at home, and that is exactly what she has been doing since September 2021.
Her journey with Stella is one that has spanned years and multiple addresses. As a volunteer, she has had the privilege of being a small, constant presence in her life, a thread running through the tapestry of her recent years. She first got to know Stella when she was still in her own home, then followed her through her transition to assisted living, and now, as her needs have grown, she’s here for her newest chapter in long-term care.
This past week marked another significant change, and a major milestone. Stella has transitioned from the rehabilitation wing at a nursing home and the two reunited again for her 89th birthday party. Gail says Stella is settling in well and has a lovely roommate, which is a great comfort.
While Stella is pretty stable, her primary challenges are related to declining strength and mobility. This move ensures she has the continuous, specialized care she needs for these issues.
Stella’s son is local, but Gail knows how important it is to have other visitors, especially during the cozy birthday celebration. “It was wonderful seeing her light up as she enjoyed the company of her family, friends, and the caring staff. The menu was perfectly fun: pizza and cheesecake, a truly perfect 89th birthday treat.” Gail said.
Gail committed through all the moves and changes; their bond remains strong. She will continue her weekly visits for socialization. It’s a part of my week, and she genuinely looks forward to seeing Stella and sharing a laugh is a rewarding connection that keeps her going, too.
Keep the kindenss flowing this holiday season,
