Catching Up in a World That Left Us Behind: A Call for Empowerment

Catching Up in a World That Left Us Behind: A Call for Empowerment
I graduated from UConn in 1998 as a physical therapist. My world was hands-on, not tech-driven. I remember the sound of dial-up internet, my first flip phone, and my first smartphone, which was a BlackBerry. I still have it today hidden in a drawer, my boys find it fascinating, like a fossil. I watched technology evolve from bulky desktops to sleek smartphones. Back then, many thought tech was a fad. But for those who didn’t embrace it, the world moved on without them.

Now, they’re trying to catch up, learning smartphones, PCs, tablets, Microsoft, Apple, and Google. It’s overwhelming. We need an encyclopedia for the glossary of tech terms. What’s a portal? What’s a domain? What’s AI? What are cookies?

But when they learn, when they succeed, their eyes light up. One small victory online can change a life.

UR Community Tech Center is helping people navigate the digital world, because it’s no longer optional. From applying to jobs, online trading to streaming music, from paper tickets to digital wallets, from real news to misinformation, the shift has been seismic. And now, we face AI, its promise, its peril.

I urge you: come in. Let us help you optimize your devices, build your confidence, and prepare for your future. Learn to manage the flood of texts, calls, apply for a job, check your health app, and/or set up your email. Learn to protect your privacy, your finances, and your health.
Because equality isn’t just about rights, it’s about access. And access starts with knowledge.
We are located at 153 Spruce Street, Manchester. Volunteers run us. If you would like to donate your time to this work, of helping people to lessen the digital divide, call us.
We are traveling across Connecticut to teach Tech Classes. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you are interested in having us teach your residents.

Let’s grow together,
