Michelle Puzzo and her meme.

Love You, Meme — Michelle’s Story

She was gruff. She was tough.
But she had to be.

My grandmother, my Meme, grew up in an orphanage with little education, facing challenges from the very start of her life. Those early struggles shaped her into someone who didn’t back down, who could weather any storm.

She married, had five children, and yet never learned how to drive. That meant she depended entirely on my grandfather to get anywhere, a reality that brought its own set of challenges. But Meme made it work. She always did.

She didn’t show love with flowery words or soft gestures. Instead, her love was steady, practical, and protective, a constant in our family. And to her last day, she was deeply loved by all of us.

Love you, Meme.

My Meme outlived all my other grandparents, giving me the gift of the most time with her. I was always trying to understand the layers of who she was and why life had shaped her that way. Her life was never easy, but give her a drink, a cigarette, and a deck of cards, and you’d see her whole face light up with a rare, unguarded happiness.

In honor of her birthday on September 3rd, I’m asking for donations to celebrate her life and the strength she showed every day. Your gift will help others find connection, comfort, and moments of happiness, just like she treasured.
