I was happy to kick off the event, giving a warm welcome to the students and veterans, setting the tone for a day of learning and connection. Students had the unique opportunity to hear from an incredible lineup of speakers:
James Amaro – Chair, Manchester Veteran Council & VA employee
Ray Burrington – Sgt. at Arms, Marine Corps
Paul Scappaticci – Vice Chair, Manchester Veterans Committee
Richard Zaremba – Manchester Banner Program
Joel Cox – Assistant Town Manager
Recruiters – Air Force, Army, Marines
Natasha Randolph, MPH, LCSW – VA Connecticut

Each speaker shared personal stories and insights about military service, community involvement, and the importance of supporting veterans. Students didn’t just listen, they engaged. Thoughtful questions flowed throughout the sessions, ranging from “What inspired you to serve?” to “How can young people make a difference for veterans today?” Their curiosity and respect were evident, creating meaningful dialogue that resonated with everyone in the room.
Veterans expressed how much they appreciated the students’ genuine interest and feedback. Many remarked that sharing their experiences with such an attentive audience was both rewarding and uplifting. Activities led by Richard Zaremba and Natasha Randolph added an interactive element, allowing students to connect with the stories in a hands-on way.
The event concluded with a tour of the Midwest Food Bank, followed by lunch and student reflections. Students shared what they learned and how the conversations inspired them to think about service and community in new ways.
This Veteran’s Learning Event was more than a program; it was a bridge between generations, fostering understanding and gratitude. A big thank you to all the speakers, students, and volunteers who made this day possible!
