At UR Community Cares, we believe that no one should feel alone, especially our older and disabled neighbors who often face barriers that limit connection, independence, and access to everyday essentials. Through our growing network of programs, we are transforming what it means to age in place by surrounding individuals with support, compassion, and opportunity.
At the heart of our mission is the Neighbors Helping Neighbors program. This initiative connects volunteers with older and disabled adults for both in-person and virtual companionship, helping to reduce the strong and often unseen effects of loneliness and social isolation. Whether it’s a friendly visit, a phone call, or assistance with daily tasks, these interactions create meaningful relationships that uplift and empower. In addition, volunteers provide transportation for those who can no longer drive, opening the door to medical appointments, social outings, and community engagement that might otherwise be out of reach.
Our UR Community Tech Center plays a critical role in fostering independence in today’s digital world. By offering tech classes, socials, and hands-on volunteer support, we help individuals learn how to navigate online tools. Whether it’s connecting with loved ones, managing finances, accessing healthcare portals, or shopping for essentials. This knowledge not only builds confidence but also ensures that participants can remain safely and independently in their homes. Make an appointment or come to our social this Friday, April 10th, from 1-2:30 pm to celebrate our 2-year anniversary. Join us at 153 Spruce Street, Manchester, CT.

Understanding that hearing loss can be a major contributor to isolation, our Hearing Program focuses on connecting individuals with resources and solutions that make communication easier and more comfortable. For many, hearing challenges can make social settings overwhelming, leading to withdrawal. By helping people access support and tools tailored to their needs, we empower them to re-engage with their communities.
We have multiple Lunch & Learns scheduled to discuss more on these topics:
Thurs., April 23rd, 12-1 pm, our Guest Speaker is Hannah M. Neale, Relay Connecticut, Outreach & Equipment Coordinator.

Our UR Vision Resources is launching in April, our comprehensive 2026 Vision Directory designed specifically for individuals who are blind or have low vision. You can download in our new shop on our website, www.urcommunitycares.org. This resource will provide access to essential services, innovative apps, and supportive tools, ensuring that individuals can better navigate their daily lives and remain informed, connected, and independent. We visit support groups and senior centers to share information about available assistive devices. Individuals can also visit our Tech Center at 153 Spruce Street, Manchester to demo low-vision tools, including CCTVs, and schedule an appointment through our website. Families often leave with tears of relief, comforted by the knowledge that meaningful support and resources are available for their loved ones.
Cycling Without Age Manchester is now open for the season, offering individuals with limited mobility the opportunity to experience local trails and enjoy places they may not otherwise be able to access. Join us for the Cheney Rail Trail Treasure Ride on Saturday, May 30th, a free community event where participants can walk or ride along the trail with guides, discover hidden gems throughout Manchester, and earn prizes along the way.

We’re also hosting another free community event on Saturday, June 13th at Center Springs Park, simply scan the QR code on the flyer to sign up. We will feature challenge stations and prizes as we celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary. At both events, we’ll offer complimentary rickshaw rides, making it easy for everyone to participate. If you or someone you know may not feel comfortable walking the full distance, we would be delighted to provide a relaxing and enjoyable ride in one of our chariots.

Together, these programs create more than just services; they build a community of care. Families gain peace of mind, volunteers find purpose, and participants rediscover a sense of belonging. The impact extends far beyond individual interactions, strengthening the fabric of entire communities.
At UR Community Cares, you can support our work by purchasing a mug or T-shirt, or by donating to help us continue our mission. Together, we are not only addressing immediate needs; we are building lasting connections, restoring dignity, and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live with independence, confidence, and support. As a statewide nonprofit, all are welcome to attend our free community events.
We hope to see you at one of our events, or sign up to volunteer, go to our website: www.urcommunitycares.org
