As the crisp autumn air sets in and the leaves begin to fall, it’s important to remember that this season brings unique challenges for older and disabled adults in our community. The cooler weather and shorter days can affect physical health, mental well-being, and the ability to stay connected with others. At UR Community Cares, we’re committed to ensuring that the people we serve continue to thrive during this season by providing essential support, resources, and companionship.
Staying Active and Healthy
With the drop in temperature, staying physically active can become more difficult, especially when we live in the northeast. It’s crucial to encourage regular movement to maintain joint mobility, cardiovascular health, and overall well-being. Simple indoor exercises, walks in the park, or chair yoga are great ways to stay active while enjoying the beauty of fall. We also offer resources and programs that help older and disabled adults remain physically engaged even as outdoor activities slow down. Check out our website for all of our free programs, www.urcommunitycares.org. As an example we have had about 100 people walk in to get assistance, at no cost, over the last few months into our Tech Center, and Volunteers are able to provide them with information on how to get connected on their device to family, friends and other online resources.
Combating Isolation
As daylight decreases, many older and disabled adults may feel more isolated, especially those who live alone or face mobility challenges. Loneliness and social isolation can have a significant impact on mental health, as many can be home alone. This fall, we encourage family members, friends, and neighbors to reach out and check in with the elders in their lives. Volunteers are going in person or doing phone calls to boosting their spirits. In our Neighbors Helping Neighbors program, a Volunteer Gail visits our Member Stella weekly to provide companionship and helps with housework she has difficulty with.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program
At UR Community Cares, we provide companionship services through our amazing volunteers, who regularly visit and assist older adults with daily tasks, offering much-needed social interaction. Our mission is to ensure that no one in our community feels alone or unsupported. Signing up to be a volunteer can ensure more of our Connecticut aging residents can be socializing and feel heard.
Preparing for the Cold Months Ahead
Fall is also the perfect time for older adults to prepare their homes for the colder months ahead. Ensuring homes are well-insulated, heating systems are checked, and warm clothing is accessible are all key to staying safe and comfortable as winter approaches. Volunteers can pick and choose the categories’ they would like to offer assistance. People can call us at 860-430-4557 and we connect older adults with resources such as their local Agency on Aging.
