As the holiday season draws near, many of us start to think about giving—gifts for family, meals shared with friends, and festive gatherings. But for some older adults, the season also brings feelings of isolation and limited mobility, making it harder to participate in the community, attend essential appointments, or simply connect with others.
Imagine being unable to drive to the senior center, where a warm community waits to greet you, or to attend physical therapy sessions that keep you strong and healthy. Imagine wanting a friendly face to accompany you to a doctor’s appointment, or even just a conversation with a friend to lift your spirits. This is the reality for many older adults who face transportation and mobility barriers. Yet, these challenges are where volunteers make a world of difference.
Every day, UR Community Cares volunteers are acting as Mrs. Claus, providing older adults with safe, reliable rides to the places they need to be: senior centers, doctor appointments, even to surgery and follow-up care. These aren’t just simple errands—they’re life-giving connections that support independence, health, and joy. In addition to rides, some volunteers become “friendly visitors,” joining older adults for virtual phone calls, sharing stories, and offering companionship that eases loneliness.
Others step in as tech guides, helping older adults set up their phones, learn how to video chat, or manage apps that make staying in touch easier. These simple acts have a huge impact. A phone call can brighten a day. A ride can make the difference between wellness and isolation. And a helping hand with technology can open doors to a new world of connectivity.
This holiday season, consider being a Secret Santa or Mrs. Claus and giving the gift of your time. Becoming a volunteer means you’re offering more than just a ride or a phone call—you’re giving companionship, independence, and a renewed sense of community. As we celebrate the spirit of giving, let’s remember the impact we can have by sharing a bit of our time and kindness with those who need it most.
Join us in making this season brighter for older adults in our community. Whether it’s driving, calling, or simply visiting, your presence will be a gift they’ll cherish all year long.
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart. Helen Keller.
