Friendship Blooms: How a Volunteer Became an Angel to a Neighbor in Need
For Stella, aging alone in her longtime home had become increasingly difficult. At 88, she was fiercely independent but declining health, and the once-simple tasks of making her bed, doing laundry, or even just having company to share a conversation with had become rare. Most days, she felt the heavy weight of loneliness—until she met Gail.
Gail, a dedicated volunteer with UR Community Cares, signed up as a friendly visitor, eager to lend a hand to an older adult in need. She was matched with Stella, and from the very first visit, a special bond was formed.
At first, Gail helped her in her 2 story home doing housework—dusting shelves, folding laundry, and making sure Stella’s home remained a safe and comfortable space. But as time passed, their relationship grew beyond just chores. Stella now in her new handicap-accessible apartment sits in her cozy chair, sharing stories from her past—of love, laughter, and lessons learned—while Gail listens intently, cherishing every moment.
With every visit, Stella’s loneliness began to fade. Her once-quiet home is now filled with laughter, warmth, and companionship. “She’s my angel,” Stella often says, her face lighting up the moment Gail walks through the door. “She brings joy back into my days.”
For Gail, the experience has been just as rewarding. “I signed up to help, but I never expected to gain such a dear friend,” she shares. “Stella has taught me so much about resilience and gratitude.”
Their friendship is a testament to the power of human connection—how a simple act of kindness can change lives. Through UR Community Cares, volunteers like Gail are making a difference, proving that no one should feel alone.
