OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE COMMUNITY CHEERLEADERS!

Week in Review: Empowering Older Adults with Technology

This week, our team had the rewarding experience of assisting older adults like Sally in navigating the complexities of modern technology. Despite her limited understanding of devices such as iPhones, smartwatches, and tablets, her determination to learn was truly inspiring.

Understanding the Basics

Sally has numerous gadgets, she needed to be guided through them on essential functions such as signing in, using settings to set her preferences, and using apps. The process required patience and repetition, but her progress was evident as she gradually became more comfortable with her devices.

Setting Up a Smartwatch

Next, we helped Sally set up her new smartwatch. This involved pairing the watch with her iPhone, configuring health tracking features, and customizing notifications. The step-by-step approach ensured she could follow along and practice each procedure until she felt confident.

Signing into Accounts on a Tablet

Additionally, we assisted Sally in signing into her accounts on her new tablet. This included creating strong passwords, understanding security features, and navigating different apps. Repetition was key here, as she needed time to grasp each step and practice logging in independently. She came in multiple times to take her learning slow and steady.

The Importance of Patience and Repetition

Throughout the week, the importance of patience and repetition became clear. Sally’s lack of prior knowledge meant that each new concept had to be introduced slowly and reinforced multiple times. Our team remained supportive and encouraging, celebrating each milestone she achieved, and our volunteers where her biggest cheerleaders!

Conclusion

Helping older adults like Sally is a reminder of the value of patience and the joy of seeing someone gain confidence in using technology. Her progress this week is a testament to their perseverance and our commitment to providing compassionate, effective support. Sign up to be a volunteer at www.URCommunityCares.org.

Community Conversation on Gambling: Insights from Chris Grant

This week, our community had the privilege of attending an enlightening conversation on gambling, presented by Chris Grant, the Executive Director of the Lavender Policy Center. The session was both informative and eye-opening, shedding light on various aspects of gambling and its impact on our society.

Defining Gambling

Chris began by defining gambling, explaining it as the act of risking money or valuables on an event with an uncertain outcome. He emphasized that gambling is not limited to casinos and lotteries but includes online betting, sports betting, and even informal games among friends.

Types and Definitions

The discussion covered different types of gambling, including:
Casino Gambling: Slot machines, poker, blackjack, etc.
Sports Betting: Wagering on sports events.
Online Gambling: Betting through websites and apps.
Lottery: Buying tickets for a chance to win prizes.

Chris provided clear definitions for each type, helping attendees understand the broad spectrum of gambling activities.

Prevalence in Connecticut

One of the key points was the prevalence of gambling in Connecticut. Chris shared statistics showing that gambling is a widespread activity in the state, with 1.5-2% of the population in CT, 53,500+ participating in various forms. He highlighted that while gambling can be a recreational activity for some, it can become a hidden addiction for others.

Impact on Underserved Communities

Chris also addressed the increase in gambling within underserved communities. He explained that these communities are often more vulnerable to gambling addiction due to factors such as economic stress, lack of access to education and insurance, and distrust of health providers. The conversation underscored the need for targeted support and resources to help these communities.

Who is at Risk?

The session identified groups at higher risk of developing gambling problems, like an early “big win” including:
Young Adults: Due to increased exposure to online gambling.
Low-Income Individuals: Seeking quick financial relief.
People with Mental Health Issues: Using gambling as a coping mechanism.

Ways to Help

Chris provided practical advice on how to reduce the risk of gambling addiction:
Reduce Online Access: Limiting exposure to online gambling platforms.
Increase Exercise: Promoting physical activity as a healthy alternative.
Avoid Alcohol: Reducing alcohol consumption, which can impair judgment.
Phone Help Line: Encouraging those in need to call the helpline at 888-789-7777 orwww.gamblersanonymous.org for support.

Conclusion

The community conversation led by Chris Grant was a valuable opportunity to learn about the complexities of gambling and its impact on our lives. By understanding the risks and taking proactive steps, we can help mitigate the negative effects of gambling and support those who are struggling.
