At UR Community Tech Center, we have the pleasure of welcoming many wonderful individuals who are eager to learn and grow. One such individual is Pyong, who visits us weekly for small batches of technology training. One time she said “Whatever I touch on my iPhone or iPad something goes wrong and I feel confused.” These devices don’t come with a manual that is easy to comprehend for many older adults.
Pyong, like many others, finds herself overwhelmed at times by the complexities of modern technology. She has a genuine fear of scams, which makes her hesitant to explore the full potential of her devices. Her iPad, for instance, often feels like a mystery to her. She affectionately calls Siri “Cherry” and struggles with using the side keys on her smartphone, often adjusting the volume incorrectly.
Despite these challenges, Pyong’s determination to learn is truly inspiring. Our dedicated volunteers sit patiently with her, guiding her through each step with kindness and understanding. They help her navigate her iPad, teaching her how to use apps safely and effectively. They also show her the correct way to use her smartphone’s side keys, ensuring she feels more in control of her device.
Each week, we see a noticeable improvement in Pyong’s skills and confidence. She begins to understand how to protect herself from scams, and her interactions with “Cherry” become more accurate and efficient. The fear and frustration she once felt are gradually replaced with a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. Pyong’s story is a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do at UR Community Tech Center. It’s about more than just teaching technology; it’s about building confidence, fostering independence, and creating a supportive community where everyone can thrive. Her journey is a testament to the power of patience, dedication, and community support. We are incredibly proud of Pyong and all our participants who take the brave step to learn something new. Their journeys inspire us to continue our mission of providing accessible and compassionate technology training for all.
